PSC vows to help family of late young sepak takraw athlete

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Sports Commission is lending a helping hand to an 11-year-old sepak takraw athlete who died recently in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao Athletic Association meet in Parang, Maguindanao.

PSC chair Patrick Gregorio on Saturday said they are currently getting in touch with the family of the athlete, a fifth-grader from Lamitan, Basilan, and will hand out a financial assistance worth P10,000.

“We will help,” Gregorio told The STAR.

Gregorio said he had ordered his staff to look deeper into the incident so that it would prevent such a tragic event from happening again.

“We will look into this,” he said.

Based on early reports obtained by the government sports-funding agency, the cause of death was acute respiratory failure due to aspiration.

The said athlete experienced choking and was immediately attended to by the games’ medical team.

Despite the quick action, the athlete continued to have difficulty breathing and his vital signs remained unstable and he was rushed to the Cotabato Regional Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival.
