A ranking leader of the New People’s Army was arrested when security forces carried out an operation in Guiguinto, Bulacan, the military reported.
Arrested was Philip Alcantara alias “Joshua,” a platoon leader of the Southern Tagalog Regional Party Committee’s (STRPC) Regional Special Operations Group, according to a report from the Armed Forces’ Northern Luzon Command.
Alcantara is the son of Tirso Alcantara alias “Ka Bart,” an NPA commander who later became consultant of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines.
Soldiers and policemen carried out the operation around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, in Brgy. Panginay.
Maj. Gen. Alfredo Rosario Jr., Army 7th Infantry Division commander, said the younger Alcantara was arrested on a warrant for multiple frustrated murder and multiple attempted murder issued by the court in Infanta, Quezon.
He is also facing charges for violation of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act and illegal possession of explosives, Rosario said.
Operatives seized a caliber-.45 pistol, several rounds of ammunition, and a hand grenade from Alcantara.
Lt. Gen. Arnulfo Burgos Jr., Nolcom chief, said vigilance and cooperation of residents played a vital role in the operation.
He reiterated calls for remaining NPA members to abandon the armed struggle and return to the folds of the law.
“Government forces will never hesitate to use their full might against those who cause harm and disrupt peace,” Burgos added.
