MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines received its highest ranking in 21 years on the Reporters Without Borders’ (RSF) World Press Freedom Index in 2025. The country currently ranks 116th out of 180 countries and territories — jumping 18 places from its 2024 ranking.
Despite this, the press freedom situation in the country remains difficult. The RSF noted only a slight improvement in the safety and legal aspects surrounding press freedom in the Philippines. Journalists covering Malacañang have also struggled with access to the Marcos Jr. administration, and economic conditions and an evolving information landscape have challenged journalism’s role in society and democracy.
Rappler digital forensics researcher Gaby Baizas sits down with RSF’s Asia-Pacific advocacy manager Aleksandra Bielakowska to talk about the state of the press in the Philippines, and what this means for Philippine society.
