MANILA, Philippines — A royal treatment awaits Alex Eala and the rest of the world taking part in the WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open slated January 26-31 at the newly refurbished Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
“It is just right that when you have one of the best in the world, we have to have a tournament here in our country where our countrymen will get a chance to see and cheer for her in person,” said Philippine Sports Commission chair Patrick Gregorio during Thursday’s media briefing.
Gregorio, of course, was referring to Eala, who flew in on Wednesday night straight from Melbourne where she had a first-round exit in the Australian Open.
“The excitement is different for the city, for the country and countrymen when you have someone like Alex Eala coming and playing on local soil,” he said. “It makes the city, the country and people proud, that is the effect of an international-caliber athlete like Alex, it all makes us proud.”
Gregorio toured the media around the venue and vowed to total completion by Friday.
“It will all be finished in 48 hours,” he said.
The center court will be located in the old open court, where Courts 1, 2 and 3 used to stand, and will come with a new seating gallery that could accommodate around 2,000 fans.
Court 2 and 3 is located just beside the main court.
Gregorio did not confirm nor deny if tickets were sold out but he said demands are just through the roof.
“If you could see my cell phone, I can’t help but smile with the ticket requests. That’s the interest you want for this kind of event,” he said.
