Rosegie Ramos nabs bronze in SEAG weightlifting debut

Rosegie Ramos capped off a solid debut in the Southeast Asian Games with a bronze medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting category Thursday, May 19 in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The 17-year-old who hails from the weightlifting hotbed of Zamboanga City posted a total lift of 179kgs during the event held at the Hanoi Sports Training and Competition Center to secure a podium finish.

She lifted 81kgs on her third attempt in snatch before registering 98kgs on the second attempt in clean and jerk.

Thailand’s Surodchana Khambao won the gold with a SEA Games record of 195kgs (88kgs in snatch and 107kgs in clean and jerk), while Dinh Thi Pham of host Vietnam settled for silver with 183kgs (80kgs and 103kgs).

Ramos also benefited from the failed lifts of Indonesia’s Aisha Windy Cantika and Myanmar’s Pyae Pyae Phyo.

Cantika failed to lift 100kgs in all three attempts in clean and jerk while Phyo no lifted 104kgs on her final try.

The Indonesian had 86kgs in snatch while the Burmese lifter finished fourth with a total lift of 171kgs.

Ramos’ feat came after Mary Flor Diaz and Fernando Agad failed to reach the podium in their respective events.

Diaz placed last among four participants in the women’s 49kg category, falling short of repeating her bronze medal run in the 2019 edition held in Manila. She finished with a total lift of 158kgs.

Agad ended up in fifth with 248kgs in the men’s 55kg division.
