MANILA, Philippines — Alas Pilipinas couldn’t shake off a faulty start and succumbed to reigning men’s volleyball champion Indonesia, 25-17, 27-25, 26-24, on Tuesday and finished as the second seed in Group B in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games at the Indoor Stadium Huamark.
It sent the Filipinos to their first defeat after hurdling the Burmese in their only other group stage match.
The Indonesians, who topped the last edition over the Cambodians in Phnom Penh two years ago, ended up with the top seeding with a two-match sweep of the bracket.
It was a duel that the Nationals can afford to lose as they’ve already booked a semis ticket even before that showdown started.
Alas now plays the winner of the Group A battle pitting Vietnam, bronze winner in Cambodia, and Thailand, which was being played as of this writing.
The Filipinos are hoping to duplicate, if not eclipse, their historic silver finish in 2019 back home.
