MANILA, Philippines — Onwards and upwards.
Following a tough loss in Japan on Friday, Marlon Tapales said what matters is to “keep getting up” as he aims to move up in weight class.
The former two-division and unified super bantamweight world champion absorbed a unanimous decision defeat against Yukinori Oguni on Friday at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
The judges scored the bout 96-94, 97-94 and 98-92 in favor of the Japanese against Tapales, who was reportedly initially overweight by 0.1 kilogram and 0.06 pounds in his final attempt in the weigh-in.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Tapales thanked those who supported him through his journey as he looked back on his fight.
“This is life, you win some and you lose some. The important thing is to keep getting up,” he said.
“Congratulations to my opponent Yukinori Oguni.”
Tapales barely missed weight. In the official weigh-in, Tapales tipped the scales at 123.56 pounds, which is 0.06 pounds over the limit.
Oguni weighed in at 123 pounds.
“My body couldn’t keep up with making the super bantamweight limit. I will take time to rest with my family,” Tapales said.
“I will be back to try featherweight and be comfortable with the weight. Thank you very much and God bless everyone.”
Following his win, Oguni is now holding a 24-4-3 win-loss-draw record in his professional career.
Tapales, on the other hand, had his first loss in his five previous contests. It is also his fifth loss against 41 wins in his career.
