Teen drowns, 2 others rescued after being swept by waves off sandbar in Quezon

An 18-year-old student drowned and two of his companions were rescued after they were swept off by waves during an outing at a sandbar in Calauag, Quezon, police reported.

The fatality was identified as Ron Harvey Esternon, a resident of Brgy. Pinagkamaligan in the same town, according to a report from the Quezon provincial police.

Local police learned the incident around 7 p.m. Wednesday, when the fatality’s uncle reported it.

It was learned that while Esternon and schoolmates went to Brgy. Talingting for an outing and were walking at a sandbar, when waves swept them away.

Esternon and two of his companions were dragged into the deep part of the water. The two managed to refloat and were saved, but Esternon failed to resurface for quite a while, according to the report.

Esternon was later found during a search and brought to the Magsaysay Memorial District Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival by doctors, police said.
