Tom Holland to star in West End’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’

MANILA, Philippines — Spider-Man actor Tom Holland will make his theater comeback after being cast in the West End revival of "Romeo and Juliet."

Stage director Jamie Lloyd will be applying his minimalist spin on William Shakespeare's iconic tragedy when it runs in London for 12 weeks beginning May 11.

This version of "Romeo and Juliet" is billed by Lloyd's eponymous theater company as a "pulsating new vision of Shakespeare's immortal tale of wordsmiths, rhymers, lovers and fighters."

Holland will portray Romeo in what will be his first stage performance since his debut as the titular character in "Billy Elliot the Musical," which he performed on the West End over a decade ago after also playing Billy's best friend Michael Caffrey.

"Tom Holland is one of the greatest, most exciting young actors in the world," Lloyd said in a statement. "It is an honor to welcome him back to the West End."

No announcement yet has been made about who will play Juliet opposite Holland, however, sign ups for priority ticket access is already available online. Ticket selling will begin on February 13, just before Valentine's Day.

Social media posts by Holland the production itself shared a graphic that blared out the words "Violent Delights Have Violent Ends," a quote by "Romeo and Juliet" character Friar Lawrence.

Lloyd has worked with several Marvel actors on his minamalist and expressionist production in the past, including couple Tom Hiddleston and Zawe Ashton for "Betrayal," Emilia Clarke for "The Seagull," and James McAvoy for "Cyrano de Bergerac."

Most recently, Lloyd's Broadway revival of "A Doll's House" starring other Marvel stars Jessica Chastain and Arian Moayed was nominated for six Tony awards, including Best Rival of a Play and Best Direction of a Play.

Apart from his ongoing role as Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Holland is known for his roles in "Uncharted," "Onward," "Cherry," "In the Heart of the Sea," "The Devil All the Time," and most recently the series "The Crowded Room."
