With exactly a week away from the filing of Certificates of Candidacy (COC), Senator Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV believes it is about time that Vice President Leni Robredo formally announce her decision whether she will vie for the presidency in the 2022 national elections.
Trillanes, chairman of Magdalo Group, pressed Robredo to formalize her bid after the fallout of the “unity talks” in the opposition, following the proclamations of Senator Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao and Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso of their intent to gun for the country’s highest post in the next year’s elections.
The Vice President earlier confirmed that she met with the two public figures as part of the Liberal Party’s efforts to field the “broadest coalition” possible.
“The declaration of Senator Ping Lacson, Sen. Manny Pacquiao and Mayor Isko Moreno is an indication that the ‘unity talks’ VP Leni Robredo is pushing has been junked,” Trillanes said.
“It was evident that they will run for President from the start. Aside from that, they do not belong to the true opposition regardless of how much they spin the truth,” he said.
“That’s why the Magdalo Group is calling for VP Leni to announce her decision on the upcoming 2022 elections,” he added.
Robredo remains the top choice of the opposition as its standard-bearer. She previously said she is “ready” to run for President if she will be chosen as the united opposition’s bet for 2022.
Trillanes, for his part, vowed that his military group will support her possible Presidential bid but insisted that she needs to formalize it sooner.
The former lawmaker said the “true opposition” has given her ample time to make up her mind and clarified that his plan to run for President still stands in the event Robredo decided to back out.
“The opposition forces are ready to unite and back the candidacy of VP Leni as President. We are also convinced that she will win should she continue her bid,” he said.
“We are not rushing but we should not also be behind the public discussion,” he said.
“If VP is ready then we will make sure she will win. If not, then the Magdalo is ready,” he added.
At least three public officials– Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, Pacquiao and Moreno — have formally announced their Presidential run.
The Commission on Elections will begin the filing of COC for party-lists and candidates running for national positions on 1 to 8 October.
