There aren’t too many people, even mainstream sports fans, who have heard of Edrick Chan. That’s because he’s been quietly working on his craft as a practical shooter. Still a student at College of St. Benilde, the 24-year-old has surprised the shooting world with giant leaps into the Asian and world rankings this year.
In an interview with The Star and DWAN 1206 AM, Chan talked about falling in love with the sport as a kid, accompanying his father to competitions and trying it purely for fun. Inevitably, as a young teen, he was offered to be coached, and took up shooting in earnest. This year, he met fitness expert Jim Saret, who gave him a workout routine that helped his strength, focus and endurance. The results showed up in his most recent competitions.
“It helped me become more disciplined,” he admits. “Now, I wake up at 5 a.m., workout with Coach Jim, go to school, then practice. I feel stronger and can do more.”
Fortunately, he received support from six-time world champion Jethro Dionisio to further boost his chances. He dreamed of participating in the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) World Shoot XX in September in Matlosana, South Africa, which would affirm his skill and place him among the greats of the sport.
In the run-up to the IPSC World Shoot, Edrick missed being on the Philippine team by just one point. But with the help of sponsors, he was able to fly out and, wonder of wonders, placed fourth in the Classic Division. The Philippine Senate passed a resolution honoring him and the other Filipino shooters who performed well in Africa.
“We have a lot of good courses,” the interior design student explains. “But in other countries, the targets are farther away. The courses are bigger, so we have to adapt.”
A month later, he proved his class as a marksman at the Southeast Asian Shooting Association Shooting Association joust in Bangkok, where he won multiple honors. Edrick was proclaimed Classic Overall Champion, Classic Shoot-Off Champion and Class Team Champion. Chan was awarded the prestigious IPSC President Medal.
Chan hopes to be able to blend his imminent degree in interior design with his passion for shooting to design courses for the long-term. His patience, perseverance and ability to adapt have served him well. Juggling studies, training and practice shows his dedication to master his craft. It has also introduced him to those of us who truly love sport.
