MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Visayas grid on yellow alert on Friday as several maor coal plants remained unavailable resulting in supply shortage amid increased demand.
In an advisory, the transmission company said that the yellow alert would be between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. as peak demand was expected to reach 2,441 megawatts (MW), with available supply at 2,663 MW.
NGCP said that 25 plants were on forced outage on June 2026, while 9 were running on derated capacities, with 863.3 MW unavailable to the grid.
The affected plants are Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1 (169 MW), Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2 (169 MW), and Panay Energy Development Corporation Unit 3 (150 MW).
A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement but does not often lead to power interruptions.
