Woman dead after seemingly unprovoked assault in downtown Toronto, police say

An elderly woman is dead after what police believe was an unprovoked daytime assault in Toronto's downtown core on Friday, Toronto police say.

Man who allegedly fled scene now arrested, police say

Police said the assault happened around 11:39 a.m. near the intersection of Yonge and King streets. A pool of blood could be seen in front of a restaurant there Friday afternoon.

An elderly woman is dead after what police believe was an unprovoked daytime assault in Toronto's downtown core on Friday, Toronto police say.

Police said the assault happened around 11:39 a.m. near the normally busy intersection of Yonge and King streets in the city's financial district. A pool of blood could be seen in front of a restaurant in the area Friday afternoon.

Officers are expected to speak with reporters on the scene within the next hour.

Paramedics say they were called to the scene, but did not transport anyone to hospital.

A male suspect believed to be in his 40s fled the scene after the attack, but has since been arrested.
