MANILA, Philippines — Local coaches and swimmers from various clubs and organizations affiliated with the Swim League Philippines (SLP) took part in an intensive grassroots development camp, gaining hands-on lessons and advanced swimming techniques from American collegiate champion coach Stephen James Bialorucki.

The three-day camp was held from April 8-10 at the Muntinlupa Aquatic Center.

More than 100 participants attended the program, which was made possible through the efforts of SLP president Fred Ancheta, alongside former international swimmer Marites Escobar.

Designed to strengthen the foundation of Philippine swimming, the camp focused on refining techniques, improving performance, and equipping both athletes and coaches with world-class training methods.

Ancheta emphasized the importance of grassroots initiatives in shaping the future of the sport.

“This camp is about building a strong foundation for our swimmers and coaches. We want to give them access to world-class knowledge and training so they can elevate their skills and compete at a higher level,” said Ancheta.

He added that continuous learning and exposure are key to long-term success in swimming.

“Hindi lang ito para sa elite athletes. This is for everyone who wants to grow in the sport. By investing in our grassroots, we are investing in the future of Philippine swimming,” he said.

Bialorucki, known for his collegiate success in the United States, shared modern training techniques and practical insights aimed at improving efficiency in the water, stroke mechanics, and overall performance.

Escobar, who also supported the camp, highlighted the value of mentorship and collaboration in developing young talents and guiding coaches in their programs.

The grassroots development camp reflects SLP’s ongoing commitment to nurture talent from the ground up — providing opportunities for swimmers and coaches alike to learn, grow, and reach their full potential through structured, high-quality training programs. (Contributed story)
