Yulo brothers enter apparatus finals in Senior Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships

MANILA, Philippines — Filipinos can now brace for not just one, but two Yulos competing side by side and trying to conquer the artistic gymnastics world.

Siblings Carlos and Eldrew have started to show they are a pair of forces to reckon with after making the apparatus finals of the 13th Senior Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships in Sunyi, China.

The elder and more illustrious Yulo, an Olympic double-gold medalist and many-time world champion, advanced to the finales of floor exercise, parallel bars and horizontal bar while the younger one, who has made his seniors debut this year, made the cut in horizontal bar and floor exercise.

Carlos was a cut above the rest in his pet floor exercise, where he registered a 14.430 and was fourth best in parallel bars with a 13.966 and the eighth and last qualifier in horizontal bar with a 13.466.

Interestingly, Eldrew was better than Carlos in horizontal bar with a 13.633 and claimed the last slot in the floor exercise with a 13.600.

Carlos came close to snatching a bronze in the individual all-around but ended up settling for fourth with an 81.864 behind China’s Zhang Boheng (85.298) and Yang Haonan (82.398) and Japan’s Miwa Teppei (82.265).

They’ll be shooting for at least a podium finish, if not the gold, in the finals set Saturday.

As it is, it was a historic moment for both the Yulos as this marked the first time they have fought in the same division together.

And the country should get used to it as the brothers are certainly favorites to get to suit up again in more international meets, including this September’s Asian Games in Japan, the World Championships in Rotterdam, the Netherlands later this year and, if the stars align, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
