Alfrancis Chua: Gilas withdrawal not an option

Amid speculation that the Philippines will drop out from the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, Gilas Pilipinas team manager Alfrancis Chua said that was not an option.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Chua said the national team withdrawing from the Asiad was the “quickest way” out, but said team executives will continue to fight.

“Nandito kami, kami na ang gumawa, kami na ang lalaban. So kahit ganun siguro 'yung lineup… lalaban kami,” (We're here, we are working, we will fight. Despite the lineup shake ups, we will fight.) Chua told reporters.

Chua cited Gilas player June Mar Fajardo that the team wanted to play.

“Among the players, the first to answer was June Mar [Fajardo] that everybody wants to play. We've had a lot of sleepless nights but coming from the players, coming from Coach Tim [Cone], we wanna play,” he added.

Chua said Monday night was rather emotional for them, as they had to talk to Calvin Abueva, Terrence Romeo, Moala Tautuaa, and Jason Perkins, as they did not make the 37-man list for the upcoming Asiad.

Chris Ross, Kevin Alas, Arvin Tolentino, CJ Perez and Marcio Lassiter have been named the replacements for the four players that did not make the lists, and also to the injured Roger Pogoy.
