Brazil blanks China to finish VNL preliminary campaign with a win

Brazil blanked China, 25-19, 25-17, 25-17, to end its 2023 Men's Volleyball Nations League (VNL) preliminary round campaign with a win at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday, July 8.

Felipe Moreira banged 17 points built on 12 attacks, four blocks, and one service ace to lead the way for the Brazilians, who went 2-2 here in the Philippine leg of the tournament.

The quarterfinals-bound Brazil finished with an 8-win and 4-loss overall record, fifth place in the team standings at press time.

Team captain and setter Bruno Rezende orchestrated the Brazilians offense with 10 excellent sets while Otavio Henrique Rodrigues chipped in 11 points.

Lucarelli Souza dropped eight points while Adriano Fernadez pumped in seven markers in the victory.

“I think we were so focused and we served so well in the first set. We put a lot of pressure on their team. After that, it was easier to play in our defense and we managed our counter attacks really well. That's the key for this victory,” said Rezende.

“We have to improve. We have one week to prepare and to practice a lot. I think our counter attack has to be better. It's something we didn't do well this week but today was better.”

Wang Hebin and Chen Leiyang paced the Chinese with seven and four points, respectively.

China, already eliminated, dropped to 2-9, good for 15th place in the 16-team tourney.

The Chinese wrap up its campaign against Canada on Sunday, July 9.
