Cardinals frustrate Chiefs, claim fifth straight win

Marc Cuenco and Clint Escamis delivered when it mattered most as Mapua reaffirmed its mastery over Arellano, 84-75, in NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Friday, Nov. 17.

Cuenco topscored with 17 points while the Rookie-MVP candidate Escamis tallied 15 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead the Cardinals in claiming their fifth consecutive win for 14-3 atop the helm.

Despite already having clinched a Final Four berth, the Cardinals still showed their might particularly in the final frame where they surged to their biggest lead, 79-64, and never looked back.

Mapua could seal the top seeding – a first in Randy Alcantara’s life as Cardinals coach – if it beats Jose Rizal University in its final elimination round game on Wednesday, Nov. 22.

“Role ko is punan ko kakulangan ni Clint and Paolo like shooting, extra passes,” said Cuenco.

Cuenco, of course, was referring to his Mapua elders that also included Paolo Hernandez, who had a solid day of 13 points.

The result spoiled Arellano banger Lorenz Capulong’s career 22-point effort as the Chiefs dropped to 2-14, trying Letran in the standings.
