The online chess tournament, named in honor of the US-based super grandmaster, is the pro league's second conference for the 2023 season.

Cavite's top board player Anatoly Pascua Jr. Set the tone for the Spartans by beating Ruther Barredo in the blitz event.

FIDE Master Carlos Edgardo Garma, Candidate Masgter Jayson Visca, National Master Carlo Magno Rosaupan and Arena Grandmaster Voltaire Marc Paraguya also scored victories to give Cavite a 5-2 lead after the blitz round.

The Spartans continued their dominance in the rapid event as FIDE Master Noel dela Cruz, International Master Barlo Nadera, Candidate Master Jayson Visca and Arena FIDE Master Melizah Ruth Carreon defeated their respective foes to secure the opening day win.

“As Mark Shield has put it, there is always strength in numbers. The more individuals or organizations that can rally to your cause, the better.” said Praise Torre, niece of Asia's first Grandmaster Eugene Torre and captain of the Cavite team in this pro chess league.

In other Northern division games, San Juan Predators defeated Quezon City Simba's Tribe, 16-5; Manila Indios Bravos dismantled Rizal Batch Tower, 17.5-3.5; and defending champion Pasig King Pirates outplayed Isabela Knights of Alexander, 14-7.

PCAP is sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) and sponsored by San Miguel Corporation, Ayala Land, Buenaviel and PCWorx.
