Christopher Nolan to be knighted, wife Emma Thomas to receive damehood

MANILA, Philippines — The Oscar-winning couple behind "Oppenheimer," Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas, are to receive knighthood and damehood, respectively, for their services to film.

The honors were approved by King Charles III himself, as seen in a document published by the British government.

The two filmmakers received the trophy for Best Picture as producers with Charles Roven, while Nolan also won Best Director for the three-hour biopic "Oppenheimer" earlier this month.

In addition to these awards, "Oppenheimer" also won acting trophies for Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr., Best Score, Best Cinematography and Best Editing.

Netflix's co-chief executive officer, Ted Sarandos, will also be honored and named an Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire or CBE, which Nolan received in 2019 for his services to the film industry.

Sarandos' title is honorary as he is American, though non-British individuals have been named CBEs before, like Steven Spielberg, Angelina Jolie, John Williams and Pele.

The date for Nolan and Thomas' newest honors remains uncertain as the British king is receiving cancer treatment and has stepped away from royal duties.

The couple met in college and went on to run the production company Syncopy, which has overseen all but Nolan's first three films.

Apart from Nolan's Batman trilogy, "The Prestige," "Inception," "Interstallar," "Dunkirk," "Tenet" and "Oppenheimer," Syncopy also co-produced Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel."
