An announcement from the team's Facebook page on Wednesday acknowledged the passing of Bladimir Regalado, the Dominican Republic team's physiotherapist, of a heart attack while accompanying the team back home.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Bladimir Regalado, a physiotherapist for our National Team, who suffered a heart attack on the plane back from the Philippines, where he was accompanying our team at the FIBA World Cup 2023,” the announcement read in Spanish.

The team described Regalado as a “fundamental pillar” and was dedicated and passionate about his work.

Meanwhile, the official Facebook page of the 2023 FIBA World Cup had also acknowledged Regalado's passing.

“The entire FIBA team sends its love and heartfelt condolences to [the Dominican Republic] and the family of team physiotherapist Bladimir Regalado who tragically passed away while traveling home from the World Cup,” their message wrote.

Minnesota Timberwolves and Dominican Republic's Karl-Anthony Towns took to his Instagram stories, saying that “this one hurts” and showed photos and videos of Regalado during their practices.

Despite beating Gilas Pilipinas earlier during the first stages of the FIBA World Cup, the Dominican Republic was eliminated at the hands of Serbia at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday 112-79.
