Escamis shines anew as Cardinals survive Generals

Star rookie Clint Escamis showed the way anew as Mapua weathered a furious fightback from Emilio Aguinaldo College for an 83-77 win in the NCAA Season 99 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

Escamis registered 17 points, highlighted by a dagger triple from the top of the key with 33.2 seconds remaining which gave the Cardinals some breathing space at 80-74 after the Generals rallied back and trimmed the once 19-point lead to just two, 75-73, with less than two minutes left.

The rookie sensation added eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block to help Mapua tally its 11th win against three losses for a firm grip of the top spot.

The Intramuros-based squad was cruising comfortably in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter with a 68-49 cushion until JP Maguliano and Kyle Ochavo sparked a 21-5 attack to cut it to within two.

Then came Escamis, who calmly sank the three-pointer to douse the fiery run and hand EAC its seventh loss in 14 games.

Mapua captain Warren Bonifacio scored 14 points while JC Recto added 12.

Maguliano scored 29 points for the Generals, which all went down the drain in a losing cause.
