Fil-Am Finnegan joins Yulo in Paris Olympics

Filipino American artistic gymnast Aleah Finnegan will be joining fellow gymnast Carlos Yulo to the 2024 Summer Olympics next year, which will be held in Paris, France.

Finnegan finished in 32nd place at the 2023 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium with a score of 51.366, but also wound up fifth among athletes who are eligible to go to the Olympic Games.

In a video posted on the Olympic Games' social media handles, Finnegan said it was a dream come true.

“It's like a dream come true… I'm so thankful for the Philippines for giving me this opportunity for me that I would never have,” she said.

Finnegan said that it was an honor to compete for the country on the world stage.

Louisiana State University (LSU) gymnastics coach Jay Clark said it was a joyful moment for the team Aleah plays for.

“We couldn't be happier as a program for what Aleah has accomplished. She represented LSU, her family and her heritage with the utmost confidence and poise,” Clark said in a statement posted on the team website. “It was a joyful moment for all of us here to watch her hit four events and do it the way that she did it. Kudos to Aleah and Garrett out in Belgium and we want Tiger Nation to get behind her as she pushes on toward next summer in Paris.”

Finnegan is the first Filipina gymnast since Evelyn Magluyan in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo to participate at an Olympic Games.

Apart from Finnegan and Yulo, Asian Games winning athletics pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena is also headed to next year's Olympic Games.
