Hamas broadcasts video of ‘prisoner’ in Gaza

Palestinian militant group Hamas released Monday on its official Telegram channel a video of “one of the prisoners in Gaza,” showing a young woman speaking Hebrew.

According to the caption, 21-year-old Franco-Israeli woman Mia Shem had been abducted on October 7, when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel, triggering a war that has killed thousands of people in both Israel and the blockaded Gaza Strip.

“I was seriously injured in my hand. I underwent surgery on my hand at the hospital [in Gaza] for 3 hours,” she said in Hebrew, according to The Jerusalem Post.

“They are taking care of me, giving me medicine, everything is fine. I only ask that they bring me home as soon as possible to my parents, to my siblings. Get me out of here as soon as possible. Please,” she added.

The Israeli army has confirmed at least 199 hostages were taken to Gaza, while Hamas claimed earlier Monday that it and other factions are holding around 250 captives.

Intense talks are on to free hostages held by Hamas after its attack on Israel, French President Emmanuel Macron said Tuesday, after the mother of a French-Israeli captive begged world leaders to intervene.

“I want to be very cautious here… so as not to endanger the intense talks we are currently conducting,” Macron told reporters in the Albanian capital Tirana. “But they are progressing and we are following these talks hour by hour.”

Macron earlier condemned Hamas for airing the video and demanded Mia Shem’s unconditional release.

“It is an ignominy to take innocent people hostage and put them on show in this odious way,” the Elysee presidential palace quoted Macron as saying.

The victim’s mother appealed to world leaders Tuesday to free her daughter.

“I ask world leaders that my daughter be returned to us in the state that she is today, as well as the other hostages,” Keren Shem told a press conference in Tel Aviv.

“I beg the world to return my baby to me,” she added.

Shem said her daughter was at a rave party in the desert near the border when she was abducted to Gaza during the deadly attack on October 7.

“Now she is in Gaza. She is not the only one. There are many adults, children, babies and Holocaust survivors,” she said of other Israelis and foreigners held by militants.

“It is a crime against humanity. All together we need to stop this terror.” AFP
