Manila Times refutes allegations of payoff from winning ‘model cities, municipalities’

A post on X alleged that the Bacolod City government paid for an award it received on The Manila Times 'Model Cities and Municipalities of 2023.' Below is the newspaper's official statement:

The Model Cities and Municipalities Awards is an annual event of The Manila Times to give recognition to local government units (LGUs) that have made steadfast commitment to sustainable development and achieved economic growth and expansion through innovations.

LGUs are judged based on their entries submitted upon nomination. The Times provides each of the winners with two complimentary tickets to ensure their attendance. If the LGU chooses to bring more delegates, it is requested to pay an amount determined by the paper so that a table can be reserved for them at the chosen venue during the awarding ceremonies.

The payment is not, in any way, made in exchange for an award. It is unfortunate that there are people who insinuate otherwise. There are laws against Cyberlibel and we will not hesitate to hold individuals or groups who post statements without the benefit of proof responsible.

We hope this clarifies matters. Again, congratulations to the winners of this year's Model Cities and Municipalities.
