PRESIDENT Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Tuesday ordered the Department of Justice (DoJ) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to look into the supposed smuggling of onion and other agricultural products.
In a video statement, the Chief Executive tagged the act as being tantamount to economic sabotage.
“I have just given instructions to the DoJ and the NBI to initiate an investigation into the hoarding, smuggling (and) price fixing of agricultural commodities. And this is stemming from the hearing that we've conducted in the House (of Representatives), specifically by Congresswoman Stella Quimbo and the findings that they came up with,” he said.
Marcos further noted that the directive stemmed from a memorandum sent to his office by Quimbo, chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture and Food hearings.
The said document reportedly details pieces of evidence their inquiry has uncovered to substantiate claims regarding the existence of an onion cartel alleged to be behind the surge in onion prices in 2022.
