Miller impressed with Converge guards, but young guns need to be put ‘under control’

There was no doubt in new Converge assistant coach Willie Miller that the FiberXers have plenty of guards brimming with potential and that they just need to be put “under control” to reach greater heights in the PBA.

One of the heady and craftiest point guards during his time, Miller naturally has an eye for talents and he’s seeing a lot of it in the Converge backcourt rotation that featured Aljun Melecio, Alec Stockton, Schonny Winston, Mac Tallo and even Jerrick Balanza.

“Ang dami (potential),” said Miller when asked about the team’s guards who he will be handling and developing as one of Aldin Ayo’s deputies.

“Magagaling yan puro mauutak sa atin. Bata, aggressive so we just have to put them under control,” commented Miller.

Tallo and Stockton both put up solid performances after finishing with 15 and 14 points, respectively, while Winston had nine and Melecio was scoreless.

While the stellar showing was enough to earn praises from Miller, the former two-time PBA Most Valuable Player emphasized the need for the guards to control the pace – something that was absent in the 103-84 loss to Blackwater after the Bossing outran the FiberXers, 16-5.

“Kailangan they have to put the team under control palagi. Usually sa mga guards 1, 2, 3 ako nakatingin kasi yun yung mga napaglaruan kong mga position,” said Miller who got reunited with college teammate in head coach Aldin Ayo and old pal from Olongapo in team governor Archen Cayabyab.

Miller, though, is being patient with his guards as he hopes to slowly share his experiences in the league and develop them into more well-rounded players.

“Nandito naman tayo para makatulong sa mga bata. Nakakatuwa yung mga bata natin mga bagong players makaguide lang tayo makatulong lang tayo sa experience natin sa PBA maipasa natin sa mga bata,” added the PBA great.
