Surigao del Norte 2nd district Rep. Robert Ace Barbers has aired concerns over the possible link between the bombing of Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi City and a military operation in Maguindanao.

Barbers was alluding to remarks made by the Philippine National Police (PNP) Sunday, Dec. 3, just hours after the deadly blast at MSU that claimed the lives of at least four people.

“The statement of Police Brig. Gen. Allan Nobleza into a possible link between this atrocious act and the Dec. 1, 2023, military operations in the mountainous area of Datu Hoffer Ampatuan, Maguindanao del Sur, raises concerns about the complex dynamics contributing to the security challenges in that part of Mindanao,” the veteran solon said.

“This condemnable act not only inflicts immediate pain and suffering on the victims and their families but also undermines the pursuit of knowledge, respect of one’s religious faith, and sanctity of human life,” he said.

House members have been unequivocal in their condemnation of the MSU bombing, which took place during Sunday mass by students.

Barbers further called it “reprehensible” and “a despicable act of violence that demands strongest condemnation”.

The Nacionalista Party (NP) stalwart says the targeting of innocent lives “is a heinous crime that shocks the conscience”.

“I therefore denounce this bombing and call for a thorough and swift investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“Finally, I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the victims and their families as I stand in solidarity with the MSU community in the face of this senseless violence,” Barbers said.
