Romualdez wins bronze at 7th Eastern Asia Youth Chess

The lone Filipino entry at the 7th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship will go home with the bronze medal after finishing third in the standard chess 8-under division.

Danry Seth Romualdez, a grade 3 student of MGC New Life Christian Academy, scored 7.0 points in the 9-round Swiss system tournament that culminated on Thursday, August 10, in Hainan, China.

Moxuan Bai of China secured the gold medal with 8.0 points. His only setback was against Romualdez in the sixth round.

Tseesuren Tenuun of Mongolia took the silver with 7.5 points after crushing Lincoln Or of Hong Kong in the final round.

Romualdez was undefeated in the tournament as he scored victories over Tulga Lkhagvademchig of Mongolia in round 1, Dilixiati Bilali of China in round 3, Munkhjargal Munkh-Orgil of Mongolia in round 5, the eventual champion in round 6 and Beichen Zhang of China in round 8. He split the point with the eventual silver medalist in the second round, Tianwen Chen of China in the fourth round, Zhirui Zhang of China in the seventh round and Amarsaikhan Amarkhuu of Mongolia in the ninth and last round.
