Terrafirma taps Belgian big man as import

Terrafirma is tapping Belgian power forward Thomas De Thaey as its import for the 2023 PBA Season, which will kick off with the Commissioner's Cup on Nov. 5.

Dyip head coach John Cardel said the 32-year-old De Thaeyis expected to arrive on Monday evening where he has built his pro basketball career in Europe.

“Thomas is a big guy who can provide defense, rebounding and is a good spot-up shooter as well,” Cardel told The Manila Times in Filipino.

Listed at 6-8, the former North Carolina State alum, went undrafted in the NBA in 2013, but played went on to play in Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Romania, and just recently, Uruguay.

De Thaey had his best pro career with the Timba Timisoara in Romania where he averaged 18.4 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting over 35 percent from three-point zone during the 2017-18 season.

He also won a league championship with the Portuguese team Oliveirense during the 2018-2019 season, where he averaged 15 points and 7.8 rebounds.

Cardel is looking for a breakout season with Terrafirma after harvesting a bumper crop of rookies that include the 2023 top overall pick Stephen Holt, 12th pick Taylor Miller (first round), young big men Kemark Carino and Mark Sangalang (second round) and guard Tommy Olivario (fourth round).
