38,115 PH fans at Arena break FIBA attendance record

The Philippines set a new attendance record for a FIBA (International Basketball Federation) game on Friday night, as 38,115 spectators marched to the Philippine Arena on Friday night to watch the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 match between Gilas Pilipinas and the Dominican Republic.

It broke the previous FIBA record set during the United States’ final game against Russia in the 1994 FIBA World Cup finals, which 32,616 fans watched in Toronto, Canada.

“We all knew the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 was going to be special and within the first day we already have evidence of this, having witnessed this historic moment,” said Richard Carrion, the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Chairman.

“Everyone inside the Philippine Arena will never forget the amazing levels of love for both basketball and the Philippines national team that was cascading around the venue,” he added.

Earlier, Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Friday conveyed his heartfelt wishes and unwavering support to the Philippines as it embarked on the historic journey of co-hosting the FIBA World Cup 2023, a momentous event set to enthrall basketball enthusiasts worldwide.

As the Philippines opened its doors to welcome basketball teams and fans from around the globe, Speaker Romualdez, the leader of the 311-strong House of Representatives, extended his best wishes for the Philippines to succeed in co-hosting the world’s premier basketball event alongside Indonesia and Japan.

Romualdez said he strongly believes that the Philippines, renowned for its passionate love for basketball, will shine brightly as it showcases not only its organizational prowess but also its rich basketball culture.

“It is a moment of pride that Manila will be at the epicenter of this grand tournament, hosting the medal rounds and offering a stage for basketball giants from all over the globe,” Romualdez said.

“We have eagerly awaited this opportunity for years, and now the time has come for us to share our enthusiasm with the world. We are not just hosting a sporting event; we are inviting all to experience a piece of our culture, our joy, our unity, and our pride,” he added.

The Speaker also expressed his gratitude and sent his best wishes to all the teams participating in this global tournament, especially our very own 12-member Gilas Pilipinas.

“To the teams gracing our courts, thank you for being an integral part of this historic event. Whether you are competing in your initial rounds in Manila, Jakarta, or Okinawa, rest assured that the energy, spirit, and passion for the game resonate just as strongly across all venues,” Romualdez said.

“As we draw closer to the climax of this tournament, we anticipate a crescendo of emotions, remarkable talent on display, and an exhibition of basketball artistry, all culminating on September 10th in Manila,” he said.
