Alex Eala climbs 38 spots in world tennis rankings

FILIPINO tennis sensation Alex Eala climbed 38 spots in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. From 266th in May, Eala rose to 228th in the latest rankings released by the WTA on Tuesday, June 13.Her rise was expected following a string of strong performances in her last three tournaments.

The 18-year-old reached the W25 Monastir quarterfinals in Tunisia on May 26, her first quarterfinals appearance of the year.Eala then followed that up by seizing her third professional championship in the W25 Yecla in Spain on June 4.The first Filipino to win a Grand Slam juniors singles title at the 2022 US Open also made the quarterfinals of the W25 Madrid in Spain on June 10.Eala is starting to turn things around after failing to make it past the second round in the first eight tournaments she joined this year. Those early exits dropped Eala from her 217th ranking at last year's end in the WTA to 266th before she started to turn the corner last May.At 228th, Eala is 14 notches lower than her career-best 214th in the WTA rankings which she achieved in October last year.
