Fil-Australian Grentperez up for Asia tour

Filipino-Australian grentperez successfully held a free mall show at Eastwood Central Plaza. Additionally, the singer-songwriter released an EP entitled “When We Were Younger,” containing seven tracks that touch on various nostalgic aspects of an individual.

The 21-year-old artist shared in a one-on-one interview with Music Geek that he loves the story behind the mini album.

“You have this narrative of childhood, friendships, love, heartbreaks, and then family; that is what I like about it; it is very much something we can relate to.”

When asked which song felt the easiest to release from the album, he shared that “Silver Lining” and When We Were Younger were two of his favorites.

“It just makes sense because it is all about childhood memories and exploring,” he declared.

The title track, When We Were Younger, tackles the nostalgia and simplicity of childhood with its bright sounds and beautifully written lyrics.

Likewise, “Stuck On You” is a fun track one would unwind on a chill car ride, despite the lyrics depicting the struggle to move on.

“Old With You” is another jazzy track with a catchy rhythm and chorus. On the other hand, “Us Without Me” is the only melancholic stripped-down acoustic track on the album.

Silver Lining, meanwhile, is one of those songs that feels like the artist is speaking directly to his listeners while providing an optimistic view of a breakup. “When The Day Is Done” perfectly completes the album with a warm and vibrant track one would love to dance to.

Grentperez is musically inclined because of his family's fondness for music. Specifically, he grew up listening to his parents play Bee Gees and The Carpenters, whereas his siblings encouraged him to make song covers. He also revealed that some of his go-to karaoke songs are “One Last Cry,” “Ben,” “I'll Make Love to You,” and the OPM classic, “Ako'y Sa'yo, Ika'y Akin Lamang.”

Tthe singer shared his first-ever self-written song on YouTube at seven years old. Eventually, in 2019, he started writing seriously for a youth group in Church.

“I got asked to write a song for my youth group, so I wrote a church song, which turned out to be good. From then on, I started experimenting with love songs, and I was like, hey, I could make a career out of this.”

With that, grentperez is one of today's rising sensations, and his take on music is a delicate balance of creativity and sincerity.

As an observer and storyteller, he believes that making music brings people together, mentioning how incredible music can make listeners feel diverse emotions.

As a singer-songwriter, he considers several points of view when writing. Often, he draws inspiration from others' perspectives for moments and experiences he has yet to encounter. On the contrary, love songs require more personal lyrics from the artist's standpoint.

When asked about his creative process when making music, the artist shared that he starts with a chord progression that needs to move a certain way. From then on, Grant focuses on the melodies and rhythm, and that's the only time he will begin writing the lyrics.

Grentperez mentioned Juan Karlos, Zack Tabudlo, and Rex Orange County as some artists he would love to collaborate with. He added, “But if I were to talk about someone who's passed, it could be George Harrison from The Beatles!”

Ultimately, the mall show demonstrated the Gen-Z artist's ability to attract diverse listeners, mostly in their teens, jamming to his self-written songs.

“Cherry Wine” was a crowd favorite, but truthfully speaking, his fans sang along with his entire set. There is much to look forward to from the musician's future activities, as he hinted about the release of another album and an Asia trip.
