Lady Bulldogs defuse Lady Bombers to stay unbeaten in Shakey’s Super League

Defending champion National University hardly broke a sweat against Jose Rizal University, 25-11, 25-12, 25-11, to formalize its playoff entry with no scar to show in the Shakey's Super League (SSL) Collegiate Pre-Season Championship Season 2 Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

The Lady Bulldogs overwhelmed the Lady Bombers in only 67 minutes of play, meeting little no resistance in each of the three sets to complete a 3-0 sweep in Pool A entering the playoffs.

NU also found no trouble dismantling San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 25-18, 25-15, 25-13, and the University of the East, 25-15, 25-19, 25-15 to carry over a perfect slate to the playoffs featuring the top two teams from each group.

The Lady Bulldogs will tangle with Pool B No. 2 Arellano, Pool C No. 1 UST and still-to-be-known Pool D No. 2 in the new Pool E for the next round of the SSL Season 2 backed by Mikasa, Eurotel, Victory Liner, Summit Bottle Water, Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, R and B Milk Tea, Potato Corner, Rebel Sports, Converge ICT Solutions, Genius Sports and United Auctioneers, Inc.

Pool F will have Pool A No. 2 UE, Pool B leader Adamson, Pool B top-seed Far Eastern U and Pool C second placer College of St. Benilde for a single-round robin playoff positioning starting on Oct. 14 before the crossover quarterfinals against Pool E teams.

Eight players scored at least five points in NU's barrage led by rookie Arah Ella Panique with 10 points on seven hits, two blocks and ace. Nataszha Kaye Bombita and reigning SSL MVP Alyssa Solomon added eight points each.

They also drew ample support from Mhicaela Belen, Minierva Maaya and Myrtle Escanlar with six points apiece as Aishat Bello and captain Erin May Pangilinan chipped in five each.

“Syempre, hindi kami pwedeng maging complacent. Hindi kami pwedeng magrelax going into the playoffs. Mas competitive na doon. Pataas ng pataas yung level. We still have a lot to work on, especially on our service lapses,” said coach Norman Miguel.

No player managed to reach double figures for JRU, which finished winless in Pool A en route to the elimination.

Mary May Ruiz, with five points, was the lone bright spot for the Lady Bombers who also bowed to San Sebastian and UE in the 16-team SSL in cooperation with the Commission on Higher Education and the Philippine Sports Commission.

All games are accessible across all platforms live and on-demand through the social media pages of Plus Network and SSL with Solar Sports, Blast TV and Aliw Channel 23 as TV partners.
