Palace suspends govt work, classes due to heavy monsoon rains

MALACAÑANG issued Memorandum Circular 29 suspending classes in all levels and government offices in Metro Manila on Thursday due to heavy rains and floods brought by Super Typhoon “Goring” and Severe Tropical Storm “Hanna.”

The suspension was upon the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Government agencies whose main functions involve the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness and response to disasters and calamities, and the performance of other vital services, meanwhile, “shall continue with their operations and render the necessary services,” according to the circular signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin which takes effect immediately.

The NDRRMC is on red alert as a total of 85,395 families, or 305,481 persons, across seven regions in the country, have so far been affected by the southwest monsoon enhanced by the two weather disturbances.
