Rookie Mason Amos steered defending Ateneo to a 99-89 overtime victory over University of the Philippines in the first round of the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday night, Oct. 22, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
In a rematch between last year’s championship rival, the Blue Eagles handed the Fighting Maroons their first defeat of the season, and, in turn, picked up their fourth win against three losses to end the first round.
Amos stepped up with a double-double performance of 19 points and 10 rebounds on a decent 3-of-6 shooting from outside.
Chris Koon and Joseph Obasa, for their parts, delivered 17 and 13 points, respectively.
Ateneo’s victory spoiled the efforts of CJ Cansino, who finished with 20 points for the Maroons.
UP finished the first-round eliminations with a 6-1 slate.
