Veteran actress Angie Ferro, 86

AWARD-winning veteran actress Angie Ferro passed away on Thursday. She was 86 years old.

Her granddaughter Lorelie Futol confirmed the news that the actress died at 4:56 p.m. of August 17. However, she did not provide further details about the cause of death and wake as of posting time.

It will be remembered that Ferro had suffered from a stroke and was admitted to a hospital in the middle of 2022 following a “minor accident,” as stated by the film production company Sine Olivia Pilipinas.

Last May, it was reported that the actress was in critical condition, with her friends and colleagues in the showbiz industry appealing for financial support.

Among those who expressed their sympathies were the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS).

Meanwhile, screenwriter Suzette Doctolero posted on Facebook, “Patay na si Uray Hilway ng Amaya at Lola Igna. My teacher, a friend, ina ng aming teatro. Rest in Peace, BB. Angie Ferro.”

Actor Mon Confiado commented, “Pakikiramay at Panalangin sa lahat ng Umalagad. Paalam Uray Hilway.”

Yves Flores, her co-star in “Lola Igna,” wrote “Pahinga na po kayo naway lagi nyo po akong gabayan at bigyan ng lakas ng loob para patuloy umarte.”

Born on Aug. 4, 1937 in Baleno, Masbate, Ferro discovered acting when she joined PETA in 1969, then under Cecile Alvarez. She has appeared in a number of TV series and film and has won several awards such as 1979 FAMAS Best Supporting Actress for “Pagputi ng uwak… Pag-itim ng tagak” (1978) and Best Actress award at the 2019 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP) for “Lola Igna”directed by the late Eduardo Roy Jr. – her first lead role in over 60 years in the industry.

She also gained acclaim for her performances in Lav Diaz's “Evolution of a Filipino Family” (2004), as Uray Hilway in the Philippine historical drama series “Amaya” (2011) and the titular role in Chito Roño's thriller film “Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan” with Joshua Garcia playing as her onscreen grandson. It was her last project which was released last May on Amazon Prime
